Paul van der Donk ( NL : Groenlo 1976 )

During my education at the Royal Academy of Art in the Hague , I specialized in printmaking with techniques such as woodblock printing and Lino printing.

I combine these techniques with the use of “ready-made” objects.

My old shoe soles , parts of wooden wine crates or my old Nintendo Gameboy.

This creates a visual diary and also gives the work an autobiographical character.

These recycled materials are generally not suitable for printing under a press and that is why most of the work is ( partly ) printed by hand without the use of a printing press.

Traces of the production process and irregularities remain part of the work.

Restrictions in the choice of materials lead to a focus on structure, shape, color & composition.

My work is inspired by for example constructivism but also Popart.

I often make series out of a concept in different color schemes in limited editions.

Sometimes also unique works or 2 prints relating to each other.

The series “Gameboy” was made with a simple concept and limited materials.

Made with the back of my old Nintendo Gameboy.

The print of the product information refers to production in editions.

In graphics, working in editions is also common, which means that technique and visual language are in balance.

The series also refers to a period in which a game console became accessible to a large audience.

In more recent work I have used my old shoe soles.

With this I literally and figuratively follow my own footsteps.

In certain cultures it is not polite to show the bottom of your shoes to others.

While there is a lot to discover graphically under a shoe sole.

Since 2019 I am a working member of the Hague Art Circle.

Since 2012 curator of exhibitions at Wijn & Kunst atelier in the Hague.

My studio is also located at Wijn & Kunst atelier in the Hague.
